We got in addition these kinds words by IGU SEcretary General: “Congratulations to Maria and her colleagues on the COMB steering committee. There were many strong candidate Commissions this year and the award to COMB is richly deserved indeed”.
A lot of Commissions Chairs, individual Colleagues warmly congratulated to us!
Report of the IGU Commissions Excellence Award Committee
The IGU Commissions Excellence Award Committee unanimously nominates the Commission on the Mediterranean Basin (COMB) for the IGU Commissions Excellence Award 2016.
The Commission on the Mediterranean Basin is very active and highly productive. It participates consistently in IGU Congresses and Conferences, organizing successful sessions on the geography of the Mediterranean region. Moreover, it is one of the most active commissions, arranging four of its own meetings per year. We applaud COMB for securing funding in its own right from the European Union for a 5-year research project. This is exceptional amongst IGU Commissions. COMB is very creative in developing communication instruments intended to include members from countries with limited access to the usual communication outlets. The Commission communicates through media including Whatsap and Google+ groups as well as weekly mailing lists. The Commission works to motivate and encourage young geographers through the COMB Young Scholars initiative and, by having three young scholars as members of the Commission Steering Committee, COMB is also successful in increasing participation by scholars from North-African countries and facilitating connections between geographers from African countries within IGU.
The IGU Commissions Excellence Award Committee commends the Commission on the Mediterranean Basin for its excellent work.
